Throughout March, Showcase will exhibit works from the singular, self-taught artist from Syria, Sabhan Adam.
Seldom in this region one can be treated to a large and diverse selection of his mixed media works on canvas. Depicting expressionistic distortions of the human form, his subjects seem to live in a place that tears the watcher out of complacency into an uncomfortable plane of existence, where any reference to beauty depends on your level of discomfiture.
His off-kilter sensitivity to costume is as rich as embroidery, his figures rise from the canvas from places that are earthly and metaphysical simultaneously. His polemic is human and generalized rather than strictly local, making him a truly unique artist in the Arab world right now.
Sabhan Adam will be showing at Showcase Gallery from 1st to 31st March 2011
